It was the work and leisure songs of the 19th century sailing ship sailors - called shanties - that several members of the Oldenburg Naval Comradeship in Lower Saxony made their musical theme in 1974 and founded the Oldenburg Shanty Choir.
With a history spanning more than 35 years, our choir is one of the oldest and most experienced maritime song choirs in northern Germany.
With an average choir strength of 23 singers, accompanied by accordion, rhythm guitars, bass guitar, harmonica and banjo, but also with singing "a capella", there are a wide range of musical possibilities up to four-part singing.
In addition to singing seafaring mood songs, the singing of the sailors' old work songs is extensively practiced.
